Introduction

For European languages' speaker, to learn Chinese language, character is a big obstacle, hundreds and thousands of Chinese characters with different structures and shapes looks very complex to foreign learners, and obviously stopped many moving forward.

HeMa is an input method based on character’s shape or structure, and it can be used as Chinese character learning method.

HeMa method extracts 1~3 commonly used root-chars (or stroke, radical, component) from each Chinese character, such as 汉(氵又)、字(宀乛十)、结(纟土口)、构(木勹厶), and uses these root-chars (at most 3) to represent the character, and then use these root-chars to input the character to computer or cell phone through HeMa software.

HeMa uses about 100 root-chars, such as 一、乙、彐、又、王、十、土、大、木、丨、山、口、日、丿、亻、人、女、禾、丶、冫、氵、火、米, to encode all Chinese characters, in this way, HeMa transforms each character from square structure to 3 root-chars linear structure, so that each character can be described (explained) with well-known and meaningful root-chars, this greatly reduces character’s complixity.

In many characters, root-chars are important elements of the character’s shape and structure, and also are important elements of character’s meaning, therefore these root-chars play an important role for studying the character. Learner can through these root-chars to remember and understand the character much more easily.

By using HeMa input software, learners can type root-char codes to input character to computer and cell phone, every input activity composes two steps: from character to root-chars, and from root-char to character, this is an enjoyable and self-convincing learning practice, and can extremely easy the character’s learning curve.

HeMa employs about 100 root-chars to encode all Chinese characters, and classifies these root-chars to 5 columns (区) according to their first stroke (1一2一3丨4丿5丶), and divided roots in same column to 5 rows (位) according to their complexity, this forms 5X5 cells table called “root-char table” (字根表) as following image.

Each root-char fills in a particular column according to its first stroke when writing, and a particular row according to its complexity, its location in the “root-char table” can be read by inference, so the “root-char table” is easy to remember.

Each cell in the “root-char table” is numbered by column and row number, HeMa gives each root-char a two-digital numerical code, which is same as its cell’s column and row numbers, such as

On PC’s main keyboard, HeMa uses 25 alphabet keys to input 25 codes, hence to input correspondent root-char.

On number pad or cell phone, HeMa uses 12345 five keys to input these 25 codes, to input each code using two number key strikes.

On Pc number pad and cell phone, when you type the first number of code (the column number), software will list all the root-chars in the column, and notice the row number for each listed root-char for user's convenience. This feature makes the root-char code even easy to remember.

HeMa uses an advanced mechanism to encode Chinese characters with root-chars. It decomposes character to at most 3 parts, then select the first root-char from each parts and adds 1 or 2 remains’ largest root-chars up to total 3 root-chars set for each Chinese character.

80% characters can be decomposed to 3 parts, each part gives its first root-char, to form 3 root-chars set, such as

15% characters can be decomposed to 2 parts, each part gives its first root-char, getting 2 root-chars, select 1 largest root-char from remains, to form 3 root-chars set, such as:

HeMa is also extremely efficient, most characters can be input in 3 or less keystrokes, very few needs 4 keystrokes. The recorded speed of experienced typists is 200 words per minute when typing on PC main keyboard.
